Executive Summary
Degussa Goldhandel had long relied on a locally grown infrastructure that no longer met the requirements for stability and unpredictable peak loads. Together with Wamoco, the company therefore decided to switch to Magento 2 and a modern, scalable hosting architecture at maxcluster.
Thanks to the close collaboration with Wamoco and the fast support from maxcluster’s experts, the go-live went smoothly – keeping the effort required from Degussa to a minimum.
The result: improved TTFB, a higher Lighthouse score, around 30% more backend performance, and significantly more stable behavior under high traffic. Degussa Goldhandel now has a reliable, future-proof e-commerce platform.

Initial situation & challenges
Complexity of the existing infrastructure
The client had been with a local hosting partner for many years. The infrastructure had grown organically over time: numerous servers, countless interconnections and unknown background processes made it difficult to understand how things worked. The sheer number of components that had accumulated over time made it difficult to ensure transparent processes and slowed down technical adjustments.
Requirements for day-to-day operations
The shop is subject to daily peak loads and short update cycles. Added to this are business-critical requirements:
- More than 600 products are updated in price every five minutes.
- High access volumes occur at short notice and cannot be predicted.
- Monthly revenue is in the millions.
Against this backdrop, it was clear that a hosting partner with high availability and extensive expertise was indispensable. The existing infrastructure was reaching its limits, making a modern, scalable environment necessary.
Why maxcluster
Once the limits of the existing infrastructure became clear, choosing the right hosting partner moved into focus. For Degussa Goldhandel, it was crucial that the new partner not only provides high-performance servers, but also brings deep Magento 2 expertise and a scalable solution.
Key factors for deciding to switch hosting providers
The decision in favour of maxcluster was primarily driven by three factors: performance, Magento 2 expertise, and automatic scalability. Before making the final choice, a comparison with the previous hosting provider was also carried out to find the best solution for the shop’s requirements.
Technical advantages for Degussa Gold Trading
maxcluster impressed in particular with:
- A mature cluster architecture with Varnish, Redis, Solr, Elasticsearch and Sphinx that ensures fast loading times even under heavy load
- Specialization in Shopware, Magento and WooCommerce with deep expertise for high-load environments
- Personal 24/7 support without a call center or ticket ping-pong
Wamoco describes the collaboration as follows:
With maxcluster, we once again had a partner for this relaunch who was able to resolve all questions calmly and with expertise. As a result, there was no unrest at any point during the migration.
Christian von Gostomski, Wamoco GmbH
Thanks to this combination of technical expertise, stable infrastructure and direct support, the foundation was in place to implement the migration to Magento 2 efficiently.
We have been working with Wamoco GmbH for many years now – and during this time, Wamoco has established itself as a reliable partner far beyond the role of a traditional tech service provider.
Together, numerous digital projects have been successfully implemented and further developed. These include innovative solutions such as our purchase configurator or the gold savings plan, which make complex processes simple, easy to understand, and digitally tangible for our customers.
What we particularly value is not only the technical expertise and the high quality of implementation, but also the strong understanding of e-commerce, digital business models, and current trends. Wamoco regularly contributes its own ideas and impulses, supporting us not only operationally but also strategically.
In addition to traditional development and programming services, the team has also supported us in many areas of project management and has accompanied projects reliably, in a structured manner, and in a spirit of partnership.
The collaboration is characterized by trust, professionalism, and a shared commitment to quality and innovation. We look forward to many more projects together.
Matthias Wenzel, Head of eCommerce, Degussa Goldhandel.
Solution & Hosting Setup
Choosing maxcluster marked the start of the project’s concrete implementation: relaunching the existing shop on Magento 2 and replacing the previous provider’s organically grown, complex infrastructure. The teams at Degussa, Wamoco and maxcluster worked closely together to ensure all processes ran smoothly.
From May 2025 onwards, the project was driven forward intensively, enabling the go-live just six weeks later. Hosting-related issues could be resolved within minutes or hours thanks to the close collaboration with maxcluster. At the same time, the internal teams had enough leeway to run tests, adjust configurations and make final preparations for live operations.
The project’s success is reflected in the fact that Degussa had minimal effort, yet was able to gain maximum benefit from a seamless launch. The new, stable hosting architecture also created a foundation for measuring the impact on performance, availability and efficiency during ongoing operations.
Results
After switching to Magento 2 and the new hosting architecture, improvements became apparent quickly:
- Significantly better TTFB, resulting in a higher Lighthouse score and a faster user experience
- Around 30% higher backend performance: staff can complete tasks faster, and lists and processes respond noticeably more quickly
In day-to-day operations, the impact of the new setup is especially evident in stability and throughput. Despite more than 1 million entries from customer and order data, performance remained consistently high. The system handled peak loads robustly, creating a reliable foundation for daily business processes.
maxcluster played a key role in the success: the infrastructure specifically designed for high-traffic shops and direct access to experienced experts enabled quick resolution of technical questions and hosting issues. Especially given the complex legacy environment and high operational load—including more than 600 price updates every five minutes—this reliability was crucial.
Degussa Goldhandel now has a resilient, scalable Magento 2 platform that reliably supports both high traffic volumes and business-critical processes.
Conclusion
The move to Magento 2, combined with hosting at maxcluster, represents a clear technical and organisational step forward for Degussa Goldhandel. Replacing the long-established legacy infrastructure, the close collaboration between Wamoco and maxcluster, and targeted optimisations resulted in a stable, high-performance system.
The project demonstrates how crucial a robust hosting architecture and a reliable partner are for complex e-commerce platforms—especially with fluctuating traffic volumes, heavy data loads and mission-critical processes. Degussa Goldhandel now has a future-proof foundation for further growth and continuous development.
